Job Description

Provide specialized nursing care in a dynamic Emergency Room Psychiatric setting, utilizing your expertise in both emergency and psychiatric nursing to support high-risk patients. This contract role involves working 12-hour night shifts, three times a week, delivering critical assessments and interventions for psychiatric patients in an emergency environment.

Location: Situated in Overland Park, KS, near a major medical center renowned for its comprehensive emergency and psychiatric services, this position offers the opportunity to work in a progressive healthcare setting that values advanced nursing skills and patient-centered care.

Schedule/Hours:

  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Three shifts per week

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct nursing care including medication administration, restraint use, and de-escalation techniques for two high-risk psychiatric patients per shift.
  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations for all psych patients in the ER to determine disposition such as inpatient admission, discharge, or involuntary hold.
  • Coordinate inpatient or state hospital placements, safety planning, and patient transport.
  • Respond to Behavioral Response Team calls across the hospital to manage escalated situations with appropriate crisis intervention approaches.
  • Collaborate closely with emergency department physicians relying on psychiatric assessments post-medical clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Current Kansas or Compact Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Minimum of one year experience in Emergency Room nursing.
  • Minimum of one year experience in psychiatric nursing, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Proven ability to perform patient assessments, manage violent or agitated patients, and coordinate complex psychiatric dispositions.

Additional Information:

  • Weekend shifts are minimal; may be required 1-2 times per month.
  • Holiday coverage based on unit needs.
  • The role demands high independence and excellent psychiatric nursing skills.
  • This is a nicotine-free facility.
  • Orientation includes an 8-hour non-billable training session.
  • Contract position with competitive pay, client allows two cancellations per month with advance notice.
