Job Description

Provide specialized psychiatric nursing care within the emergency room setting, focusing on high-risk psychiatric patients. This contract role demands expertise in both emergency and psychiatric nursing to manage patient assessments, crisis interventions, and coordinated care plans effectively.

Location: Kansas City, KS

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver primary nursing care to two high-risk psychiatric patients per shift in the emergency department, including medication administration, restraint use, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to determine patient disposition such as inpatient admission, discharge, or involuntary hold.
  • Coordinate patient placement, safety planning, and transport arrangements to inpatient or state hospital facilities.
  • Respond promptly to Behavioral Response Team calls hospital-wide to manage escalated patients through de-escalation, limit setting, and restraint support, working collaboratively with police and nurse managers.
  • Operate independently, providing critical psychiatric assessments relied upon by ED physicians following medical clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Kansas or Compact RN license
  • Current BLS certification
  • Minimum one year of experience in an Emergency Room setting
  • Minimum one year of psychiatric nursing experience in a hospital environment
  • Proven skills in assessing violent or high-risk psychiatric patients and determining appropriate care disposition

Schedule/Hours:

  • 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, three times per week
  • Holiday work required based on unit needs
  • Occasional weekend shifts (1-2 per month) possible
  • No on-call or floating requirements

  • This position is a contract assignment that offers an independent professional role within a nicotine-free facility.
  • Orientation includes an eight-hour non-billable period.
  • The facility operates on a bi-weekly pay schedule.
  • Strong psych nursing skills are essential due to reliance on nursing assessment in this fast-paced environment.
