Job Description

This opportunity is ideal for a registered nurse with specialized neuro and neurosurgical experience seeking a 13-week contract role with 12-hour night shifts. The position focuses on caring for neuro and neuro-surgical patients, including those recovering from CVAs, elective back/neck surgeries, post-operative craniotomies, and cerebral angiograms. The role requires strong assessment and critical thinking skills to manage complex patient needs in a teaching hospital environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive neuro and neuro-surgical nursing care on a 37-bed unit.
  • Perform NIHSS and dysphagia screening, neuro assessments, and basic telemetry interpretations.
  • Manage heparin infusions, blood and blood product administration, venipuncture, and blood cultures.
  • Handle indwelling catheters, NG tubes, and drain management.
  • Work within a patient ratio ranging from 1:5 to 1:7 depending on the shift.
  • Float as needed within the skill set to nearby campuses with appropriate notice.
  • Participate in orientation and possible precepting of students and new hires.
  • Adhere to unit protocols including uniform guidelines and maintain professionalism.
  • Complete charting using EPIC electronic health records following a checkoff class.

Qualifications:

  • Active compact RN license.
  • Current AHA BLS and NIHSS certifications.
  • Minimum two years of solid neuro experience, including one travel assignment.
  • Trauma Level II experience preferred.
  • Recent EPIC charting experience required.
  • Strong neuro assessment and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Ability to work three weekends every six-week schedule and holiday rotation.
  • Must be comfortable working 12-hour night shifts (6:30 PM 7:00 AM).
  • Willingness to float within the unit and other campuses as needed.

Location:

This role involves a contract length of 13 weeks with guaranteed 36 hours per week, with options to take 48 hours. Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts. Orientation begins bi-weekly. Local candidates are not eligible due to a 40-mile radius rule. Scrub color navy blue is required with no competing agency logos.
