Job Description

A skilled CVOR Surgical Assistant role is available in a fast-paced, Level III Trauma Center located in the Milwaukee area. This contract opportunity offers the chance to work in a premier facility with Magnet designation and a comprehensive stroke center, supporting high-acuity cardiac and thoracic surgical cases. The surgical environment conducts an average of 10 cases per day across 8 CVOR beds, providing excellent experience for those with a strong cardiovascular operating room background.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in complex cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries including CABG, TAVR, valve replacements, robotic thoracic procedures (lobectomy, hernia repair), generator exchanges, lead extractions, heart transplants, and femoral-popliteal bypasses
  • Circulate during cases alongside the Med RN, supporting a surgical team of two RNs per procedure
  • Execute duties independently with minimal guidance while adhering to established instrumentation and preference cards
  • Document patient pain levels accurately before and after medication administration according to protocol
  • Maintain compliance with EPIC charting system and utilize equipment such as Alaris, Pyxis, and Da Vinci XI robotic systems
  • Participate in on-call rotations approximately once per month with a 30-minute response time when scheduled

Qualifications and Desired Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years experience as a surgical assist in a CVOR setting
  • Graduation from an accredited school; BLS certification required; CSFA preferred
  • Proficient in surgical assisting in diverse cardiac and thoracic specialties
  • Comfortable working in a high-volume, dynamic environment with patient ratios at 1:1
  • Knowledge of EPIC electronic medical records essential

Schedule and Environment:

  • Start times between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM
  • Weekend rotation on-call only with 24-hour weekend coverage on a monthly basis
  • Holiday coverage limited to on-call availability as needed
  • Fatigue policy limiting hours to 60 per week or five consecutive 12-hour shifts
  • Two-week orientation period for thorough onboarding
