Job Description
A leading Level III Trauma Center in Milwaukee, WI, is seeking a highly skilled CVOR Surgical Assistant to join their team on a contract basis. This facility is a Magnet-designated hospital and a Comprehensive Stroke Center, providing an advanced environment for cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries. The CVOR unit consists of 8 operating rooms with an average of 10 cases each day.

Responsibilities:
- Provide surgical assistance in cardiovascular and thoracic cases, including CABG, TAVR, valve replacements, robotic thoracic procedures (lobectomy, hernia repair), generator exchanges, lead extractions, heart transplants, and fem-pop bypass surgeries
- Operate independently with minimal supervision during fast-paced surgical cases
- Circulate during surgeries alongside another RN team member (circulator and med RN)
- Document pain levels before and after administration of pain medication, adhering to prescribed pain score protocols
- Utilize EPIC charting system and related surgical equipment such as Alaris, Pyxis, and DaVinci XI
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies including the fatigue policy limiting hours worked
- Participate in on-call rotations with a 30-minute response time and support weekend coverage
Qualifications/Desired Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of surgical assistant experience in cardiovascular OR settings
- Graduation from an accredited nursing or surgical assisting program
- BLS certification required; CSFA preferred
- Strong proficiency across multiple CVOR specialties, demonstrating the ability to work independently
- Experience in a high-volume, fast-paced surgical environment
- Familiarity with EPIC and other OR-related technologies
Scheduling & Work Hours:
- Typical start times between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM
- Weekend on-call rotation (24-hour coverage approximately once per month)
- Up to 7 days off with prior approval, holidays covered on an on-call basis
- No overnight sleep rooms available during on-call shifts
