Travel Nurse Duties

In many ways, the role of a travel nurse is the same as any other nurse. Travel nurse responsibilities include:

• Assessing and monitoring patients’ health
• Administering medications
• Providing ordered treatments
• Teaching patients how to optimize their health

Nurses transitioning into a travel role will find that many of their responsibilities and routines are quite similar to their permanent placements.

While travel nurses will have a similar role to staff nurses, there are some notable differences for travel RNs. Travel nurses are expected to quickly acclimate to a new environment, practicing independently after only a day or two of orientation. Travel nurses will be required to rapidly adjust to new care areas and facility policies and provide high-quality care in new and unfamiliar settings.

Travel Nurse Education Requirements

The educational requirements for travel RNs are the same as other nursing jobs. While some travel agencies may prefer BSN-prepared nurses, nurses with an associate’s degree or diploma are also eligible to be travel nurses. LPN travel nursing only requires completion of an LPN program. In California and Texas nurses in this role may be referred to as travel LVNs. Some medical surgical travel nurse positions may be open to both RNs and LPNs.
