Job Description

VocoVision is seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services for students in a Mississippi school district. As a contracted interpreter, you will work remotely to facilitate communication and support students with hearing impairments in their academic learning and extracurricular activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and fluent American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for students, teachers, and other school staff during classes, meetings, and school events.
  • Support students in various settings, including individual and group classes, school assemblies, and extracurricular activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students with hearing impairments.
  • Prepare and review lesson materials to be familiar with subject matter and vocabulary used in classes.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards as outlined in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the progress and needs of students.
  • Adapt interpreting methods to suit the unique needs of each student and situation.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (e.g., NIC, CI/CT, or similar recognized certification).
  • Bachelor's degree in ASL/English Interpretation, Deaf Studies, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience interpreting in educational settings, ideally within K-12 schools.
  • Familiarity with the Mississippi Department of Education's standards and regulations for sign language interpreting.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a virtual environment.
  • Access to reliable internet and a quiet, professional workspace for remote interpreting.
  • Flexibility to work during school hours, and potentially evenings and weekends for school events or meetings.
  • Passionate about working with students and supporting their educational journey.
