Teacher of the Visually Impaired - Contract

Columbia, MD - Sunbelt is hiring a Teacher of the Visually Impaired for a full time job at a local school district. This job opportunity is itinerant and will require reliable transportation. We are looking for someone who is flexible and willing to work with any age groups. Ages range from 3 to 21 years old and caseload could be between 3 to 6 school sites. Main responsibility of the Teacher of the Visually Impaired will be to coordinate educational programs for students with visual impairments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach visually impaired students in an individual and/or group setting
  • Instruct core curriculum including modified and grade level content standards
  • Develop, review and evaluate individualized educational plan (IEP) 
  • Observe and respond to environmental stimuli 
  • Conduct evaluations and assessments to determine developmental status and academic status
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and IEP meetings
  • Manage classroom resources


  • Master's Degree in Education with specialization in Visual Impairments
  • Maryland Department of Education certification with Visual Impairment endorsement
  • Some knowledge of medical disorders, adaptive technology and alternate modes of communication
  • Knowledge of special education principles, practices and procedures
  • Ability to develop and write IEP's
  • Previous experience is preferred, but Sunbelt will consider new graduates who are ready to hit the ground running.
