Job Description
Make a meaningful impact by supporting students with visual impairments through your expertise as a Braillist. In this contract opportunity at an elementary school, youll work alongside educators to ensure students have full access to the general education curriculum by transforming course materials into accessible formats like braille and tactile graphics.
The Braillists role is central to equitable education. Youll collaborate closely with teachers for the visually impaired and classroom staff to keep curriculum materials current and delivered in the formats each student requires.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Successfully passed the ParaPro Test, or hold an associates or bachelors degree
- Demonstrated proficiency in Unified English Braille (UEB) within one year of employment, verified through:
- The Braille competency test by the Washington State School for the Blind,
- The National Certification in Unified English Braille exam (NBPCB), or
- A Library of Congress Certificate in Literary Braille Transcribing
- Experience collaborating with special education professionals and a working knowledge of accessible educational materials is highly valued
Key Responsibilities:
- Transcribe textbooks, assessments, and classroom materials into braille, tactile graphics, and other accessible formats
- Support teachers by ensuring timely conversion and distribution of instructional content
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold standards for student privacy and equitable access
- Participate in staff meetings and training related to assistive technology and accessibility
