Job Description

Play a vital role in empowering students with visual impairments by ensuring equitable access to their education. This contract opportunity invites a skilled Braillist to join an elementary school setting, working closely with teachers and students to adapt academic content into braille, tactile graphics, and accessible formats. Your expertise will directly support students journey through the general education curriculum, making learning both inclusive and effective.

Qualifications and Experience Sought:

  • Passing scores on the ParaPro Test, or an associate's/bachelor's degree
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Unified English Braille (UEB) within one year of employment, verified by one of the following:
    • Braille competency test from the Washington State School for the Blind
    • National Certification in Unified English Braille (NBPCB)
    • Library of Congress Certificate in Literary Braille Transcribing
  • Strong understanding of the specific educational requirements for students who are visually impaired
  • Collaborative, communicative approach when working with multi-disciplinary school teams

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe educational materials into braille, tactile graphics, and accessible electronic formats for students
  • Work alongside educators and specialists to adapt classroom content for individual student needs
  • Provide technical guidance on braille readers and other assistive technologies
  • Assist with organization and distribution of accessible materials, ensuring timely delivery to students
  • Contribute to ongoing assessment and improvement of accessible materials in support of each students academic goals
