Job Description

A K-12 school in Wilmington, NC is seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide professional communication support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students throughout the current school year (CSY). This contract position plays a vital role in fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment by facilitating effective communication between students, teachers, and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa during classroom instruction and school activities
  • Facilitate communication in both individual and group settings to support academic and social interactions
  • Collaborate closely with educators, administrators, and support staff to accommodate students communication needs
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards and policies related to interpretation services
  • Assist with any necessary preparation and documentation related to interpreting assignments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with demonstrated interpreting experience in educational settings
  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum and classroom environments
  • Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and communicate respectfully with diverse student populations
  • Valid certification or credentials in sign language interpreting are highly desirable
