Job Description

A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available in an elementary school setting in Holt, MI. This contract role is designed for the current school year (CSY) and supports a moderately cognitively impaired elementary-age student who is beginning to learn sign language.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for an elementary student with moderate cognitive impairment.
  • Facilitate communication between the student, educators, and peers to enhance the student's learning experience.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to tailor communication strategies to the student's needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and team meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) License is required.
  • Experience working with elementary-age children, especially those with cognitive impairments, is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of sign language and interpreting techniques.
  • Ability to adapt communication methods according to the learners developmental level and cognitive abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a school environment.
