Job Description

A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available in an elementary school setting located in Chicago, IL. This role involves providing one-on-one interpretation services for a student who is deaf and has an additional visual impairment. The caseload consists of a single student who is new to American Sign Language (ASL), offering a unique opportunity to support foundational communication development in a specialized educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clear and accurate sign language interpretation tailored to the student's level of ASL proficiency.
  • Facilitate effective communication between the student, educators, and peers to ensure full participation in classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the student's communication needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Continuously assess and adjust interpretation strategies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Qualifications and Credentials:

  • Proficient Sign Language Interpreter with demonstrated expertise in Elementary Education settings.
  • Possession of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification.
  • Experience working with students who have dual sensory impairments, particularly combining deafness and visual impairment, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills and patience essential for working with individuals new to ASL.

Work Schedule and Environment:

  • Full-time schedule, 5 days per week.
  • Contract position extending throughout the school year (CSY).
