Job Description

A school-based position is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) serving K-12 students in the Washington DC area, approximately 45 minutes south of the city in Woodbridge, VA. This contract role runs through the current school year, concluding in late May.

Two OMS positions are open: one full-time (37.5 hours per week) and one part-time (7 hours per week). The caseload includes approximately 10 students, each receiving an average of 7.5 service hours weekly. Assignments may vary by need, with a preference for on-site service, especially for the full-time role. The part-time role may consider virtual providers but prefers on-site candidates.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting orientation and mobility assessments and instruction for students with visual impairments.
  • Developing individualized plans to improve students' spatial awareness and safe travel skills.
  • Collaborating with educators, families, and therapists to support student progress.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation in compliance with school and state requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Active Orientation and Mobility Specialist licensure (such as AVCREP or equivalent) is required.
  • Completion of the Virginia Department of Social Services background check upon hire.
  • Ability to complete a TB test as required by the state of Virginia.
  • Experience working with K-12 populations preferred but new professionals encouraged.
