Job Description

A school district in Oakland, CA is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support K-12 students with visual impairments. This contract position covers the current school year (CSY) and provides an opportunity to deliver specialized mobility training that promotes independence and safety for students across all grade levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility programs tailored to students needs
  • Teach safe travel techniques in various environments including classroom, school campus, and community settings
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to integrate mobility goals into educational plans
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate students' travel skills and adapt training accordingly
  • Provide assistive technology recommendations and training related to mobility aids
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with stakeholders

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent)
  • Experience working with K-12 students, preferably in a school setting
  • Strong understanding of mobility techniques and accessibility considerations for visually impaired learners
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educational teams and families
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of assistive technology tools related to orientation and mobility

Location: Oakland, California

This contract position offers a chance to positively impact students independence and educational experience through expert orientation and mobility support.
