Job Description

An exciting opportunity is available for a dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist to empower students for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. This contract role offers a full 37.5-hour workweek and focuses on supporting the independence and confidence of students with visual impairments. The role centers on providing specialized instruction, helping students master essential mobility techniques, orientation skills, and the effective use of assistive technologyensuring seamless navigation across school, home, and community environments.

Qualifications and Desired Skills:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited university in Orientation and Mobility or a related field; a Masters degree is preferred
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility to become certified within a set timeframe
  • Prior experience teaching or supporting visually impaired students strongly preferred
  • Effective communicator with strong verbal and written English skills
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver individualized instruction in orientation and mobility techniques for students across a variety of settings
  • Assess student needs and develop customized plans to enhance independence and safety
  • Instruct students on the selection and use of assistive technologies
  • Collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to maximize student progress
  • Keep thorough documentation of student goals, strategies, and achievements
