Job Description

A school district in the Washington DC area is seeking two Orientation and Mobility Specialists (OMS) to support K-12 students with visual impairments. These contract positions provide critical services to empower students to navigate their environments safely and independently.

One full-time position (37.5 hours per week) and one part-time position (7 hours per week) are available, with assignments varying across multiple schools based on need. Caseloads typically include approximately 10 students receiving an average of 7.5 hours of support weekly. While the full-time role requires on-site presence, the part-time role may accommodate virtual services if necessary.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing individual orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments
  • Developing and implementing personalized strategies to enhance independence
  • Collaborating with educators, families, and support staff to integrate mobility skills across environments
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and progress reports
  • Complying with all state credentialing and health requirements, including Virginia Department of Social Services checks and TB testing

Qualifications:

  • Active Orientation and Mobility Specialist licensure (e.g., AVCREP or equivalent)
  • Experience working with school-age children with visual impairments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Availability to begin as soon as possible through May 29, 2026
