Job Description

This contract opportunity is for an experienced RN skilled in step-down nursing care within a specialized progressive care unit. Located in Macon, GA, this role focuses on cardiothoracic/vascular surgical patients in a Level 1 Trauma Designation teaching hospital with a comprehensive cardiac and stroke care program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide nursing care for a 24-bed progressive care unit focused on cardiothoracic, vascular surgery, cardiology, pulmonology, and general medical/surgical patients.
  • Manage patients pre- and post-operatively, including LVAD patients, and those with acute or chronic conditions.
  • Perform clinical assessments, tracheostomy care, chest tube management, IV insertion, central line care, wound monitoring, and med-surg nursing duties.
  • Administer and titrate drips such as insulin and heparin; utilize cardiac telemetry for monitoring and interpretation.
  • Collaborate in discharge planning and patient education, emphasizing renal and fluid management.
  • Utilize EMR systems (EPIC) and technologies like Alaris IV pumps, cardiac telemetry monitors, and glucommander devices.

Qualifications/Desired Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience, with strong med-surgical and critical care nursing skills.
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR).
  • Preferred: Medical-Surgical national certification.
  • Ability to manage complex care including hemodynamics, telemetry interpretation, and post-op monitoring.
  • Competence in care coordination and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Schedule:

  • 12-hour shifts, either 7 AM7 PM or 7 PM7 AM.
  • Weekend rotation of 56 shifts every 6 weeks.
  • Holiday shifts required (one major holiday per season).
  • No on-call duties.

Unit & Department Support:

  • CNAs assist with vitals, glucose checks, feeding, ambulation, and patient transport.
  • Dedicated unit secretary 7 AM11 PM; hospital-wide coverage overnight.
  • Support from charge nurses, resource nurses, respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and intensivists is available 24/7.
  • Central telemetry monitoring with technology support.
