A registered nurse opportunity is available on a medical-surgical unit specializing in the care of older adults and observation patients. This contract role is located in Milwaukee, WI, offering exposure to a diverse patient population in a Level IV Trauma Center and teaching hospital setting.
Responsibilities include providing comprehensive nursing care to patients primarily over 65 years of age with acute and chronic conditions such as dementia, stroke, heart failure, respiratory issues, and diabetes. Half of the unit focuses on medical-surgical patients with complex needs, while the other half manages observation patients with shorter stays. Nurses will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including respiratory therapists, hospitalists, occupational and physical therapists, and support staff. Patient ratios are approximately 1:5 during the day and 1:6-7 at night, ensuring a manageable workload.
Key qualifications and skills:
- 1-3 years of nursing experience, preferably in medical-surgical or older adult care
- Current BLS certification and NIHSS preferred
- Competency in managing wound care, insulin drips, tachycardia, chest tubes, nasogastric (NGT) and PEG tubes
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips is an advantage
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems such as EPIC
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Schedule includes weekend rotations approximately every other weekend, with no on-call or holiday expectations. The dress code requires professional attire without denim or camouflage, with free employee parking available.
