RN Bariatric Services Coordinator - Austin, TX

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides for the daily operations and maintenance of the bariatric surgery program. Coordinates bariatric surgery services as part of an interdisciplinary team of caregivers. Operational responsibilities include the coordination of patient scheduling, comprehensive patient education, staff education, postoperative after care, and outcome management. The Coordinator is responsible for adhering to Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence standards and mandates.

 

Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·       Maintains, directs, and evaluates the activities impacting the furtherance of the Bariatric Surgery Program; maintains close working relationship with Director of Perioperative Services regarding mission, development, and growth of Bariatric Surgery Program.

·       Liaisons between the hospital, the bariatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, and patients to ensure optimal scheduling of pre-operative testing and evaluation, and ensures timely access to affiliated programs (e.g. Surgical Prep Program).

·       Provides for Bariatric Center daily functions, and facilitates the flow of patient care services.

·       Facilitates the efficient and timely flow of PHI between the surgeon, surgery center, and bariatric center in a manner that protects patient privacy.

·       Provides comprehensive preoperative education to all patients.

·       Facilitates the efficient and timely flow of PHI between the surgeon, surgery center, and bariatric center in a manner that protects patient privacy.

·       Serves as a patient advocate. Assesses, evaluates, and problem-solves operational processes to ensure quality care is delivered with efficiency, congeniality and dignity.

·       Provides comprehensive preoperative education to all patients.

·       Works cooperatively with nursing services and ancillary departments to provide orientation material for all staff new to the bariatric surgery program. Provides for continuing staff education.

·       Conducts post discharge phone calls as a means to optimize surgical outcome.

·       Develops Community Seminars on Bariatric Surgery, invites surgeons as guest speakers, and facilitates the seminar. Maintains all materials and signage for seminars.

·       Contributes to the utilization, and maintenance of the Bariatric patient database.

·       Assists Director of Perioperative Services in the development of processes and procedures related to the Bariatric Program operational organization.

·       Assesses the capital and operational needs of the program and communicates those needs appropriately. Assists in the identification of cost-effective approaches.

·       Works closely with Director of Perioperative Services to evaluate and address quality care issues.

·       Works closely with Director of Perioperative Services to identify reimbursement issues, and develop of strategies to address these issues.

·       Attends and participates in health care system committees and department staff meetings as requested.

·       Actively supports and participates in the health care system Total Quality Management initiative as evidenced by attendance at educational programs, participation in process improvement teams, and/or providing technical assistance for the TQM process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Must maintain current knowledge of bariatric surgery, and how to work within a system to deliver multiple components of high level comprehensive care. Ability to communicate effectively to provide patient and staff education in an organized and understandable manner. Ability to organize, prioritize and manage time efficiently. Ability to adapt quickly and positively to changes in work methods, information needs and restructuring in the delivery of health care services. 

 

Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center.

 

Required:        Knowledge of Microsoft Programs

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Required:        Graduate of an accredited nursing program or currently enrolled in Alternative Entry MSN Program; Previous patient care experience with emphasis on coordination of multidisciplinary approach

 

Preferred:        Previous experience with program coordination and development

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Required:        Current Texas RN License or a Compact RN license from a NCLA Compact State; BCLS certification
